Octavia Conner: The Strength to Rebuild and the Courage to Begin Again

Behind many successful women are stories of difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, and the courage to keep moving forward when the future feels uncertain. For Octavia Conner, the journey from financial hardship to building a successful business is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of believing that a difficult chapter does not have to define the rest of your life.

When Octavia left corporate America in 2016 to pursue entrepreneurship, she had years of financial expertise and a dream of building something of her own. What followed was a challenging season that brought her dangerously close to losing her home and vehicle. Yet rather than allowing those circumstances to determine her future, she made difficult decisions, adjusted her approach, and found the courage to rebuild.

Today, Octavia is the Founder and CEO of Say Yes To Profits®, where she helps entrepreneurs strengthen their finances and create opportunities for long-term success. But beyond her professional accomplishments, she is a wife, mother of four, and a woman who has learned that true success includes more than financial achievements. It also means prioritizing her health, nurturing meaningful relationships, and having the freedom to enjoy the life she has worked so hard to create.

In this Woman To Woman Spotlight, Octavia shares the experiences that shaped her journey, the lessons she learned through adversity, and why she believes every woman has the power to begin again.

The Woman Behind the Story

Tell us about the woman you are beyond your professional titles and accomplishments. What matters most to you, and what experiences have shaped who you are today?

I am a wife, a mother of four, an entrepreneur, and a woman who knows what it means to find the courage to begin again. While many people know me for my work in finance and business, my family is at the heart of everything I do.

I want my children to understand that pursuing your dreams takes hard work, courage, and commitment, but success should also let you enjoy the people and moments that matter most. Motherhood, marriage, entrepreneurship, and overcoming financial hardship have shaped me into a more resilient, compassionate, and intentional woman. I have experienced moments of success and seasons of uncertainty, and each has taught me something valuable about life.

Beyond the awards, recognition, and professional accomplishments, I want my legacy to be reflected in the lives I have touched. I want my family to feel loved, my children to be proud of the example I set, and other women to recognize that their circumstances do not have to limit their possibilities.

Your Journey

What defining moments or turning points have shaped your journey and the woman you have become?

One of the biggest turning points in my life came when I left corporate America in 2016 to pursue entrepreneurship. Although I had experience managing the finances of a multimillion-dollar company, building my own business presented challenges I never anticipated.

I started with a laptop, a printer that barely worked, limited savings, and a dream. Eventually, I found myself facing serious financial hardship. My dream home was just one month away from foreclosure, and my vehicle was at risk of repossession. I had to make the difficult decision to return to corporate finance part-time while rebuilding my business.

But I refused to give up. Through perseverance, better financial decisions, and a willingness to change my approach, my home was never foreclosed on, and my vehicle was never repossessed. I eventually returned to entrepreneurship full-time, and what began as Smart Accounting Services evolved into Say Yes To Profits®.

Today, I am grateful not only for the business I have built but also for the journey that shaped me. My experience taught me that success is not about never experiencing setbacks. It is about how you respond, what you learn, and whether you are willing to make the changes needed to move forward.

The same woman who once faced the possibility of losing her home now helps other entrepreneurs protect what they have built, strengthen their finances, and create opportunities for lasting wealth.

Your Work and Your Purpose

Tell us about the work you do today and the purpose that drives you to make a difference.

I am the Founder and CEO of Say Yes To Profits®, a Virtual CFO and tax advisory firm helping business owners turn revenue into stronger cash flow, sustainable profitability, and opportunities to build wealth.

With more than 23 years of experience in accounting, finance, and tax strategy, along with my own entrepreneurial challenges, I understand that generating revenue doesn't always mean achieving financial success.

For me, success is more than improving financial statements. It is seeing a business owner finally pay herself consistently, confidently grow her team, or achieve a financial milestone she once thought was impossible.

Lessons Through Challenges

What have your most difficult experiences taught you about yourself, business, and the importance of perseverance?

One of the greatest lessons I learned is that having financial expertise does not automatically mean you know everything about building a successful business.

Despite my background in accounting and finance, entrepreneurship challenged me in ways I had never experienced. I learned that revenue does not equal profitability, that cash flow must be managed intentionally, and that making difficult decisions early can prevent greater challenges later.

I also learned that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Returning to corporate finance part-time initially felt like a setback, but it became an important step toward rebuilding my business and protecting my family.

Most importantly, I learned that failure is not an identity. A difficult season does not erase your experience, potential, or ability to succeed.

These lessons shape how I serve my clients today. I understand that behind every financial challenge is a person with responsibilities, dreams, and concerns. That is why I approach my work with compassion, honesty, and accountability, helping business owners recognize what needs to change and take meaningful steps forward.

“Failure is not an identity. A difficult season does not erase your experience, potential, or ability to succeed.”

Making a Difference

How are you using your experiences, knowledge, and platform to create a meaningful impact in the lives of others?

I believe financial education is one of the most powerful ways to empower people because understanding money gives individuals greater control over their decisions and futures.

Through my client work, speaking engagements, books, and the Say Yes To Profits® Podcast, I help make financial conversations more accessible and practical. I also founded Octavia's Helping Hands, Inc., which advances financial literacy and entrepreneurship in underserved communities.

Empowering women is especially meaningful to me. I want women to recognize their value, confidently discuss money, charge appropriately for their expertise, and prioritize their own financial well-being while caring for others.

I also believe in sharing the difficult parts of my journey, not just the accomplishments. Sometimes, another woman needs to know that the person encouraging her has also experienced uncertainty and setbacks.

If my story inspires even one woman to believe in herself again, take control of her finances, or pursue a dream she almost abandoned, then I know I am making a meaningful difference.

The Woman Who Keeps Growing

How has your definition of success evolved, and what does personal growth look like for you in this season of life?

My definition of success has evolved over the years. While building a profitable business and creating financial opportunities remain important, I have learned that true success also includes good health, meaningful relationships, and having the time and energy to enjoy what I am building.

Recently, I lost 40 pounds as part of becoming more intentional about my health and well-being. That journey reminded me that the same discipline and commitment I bring to my business should also go into myself.

As women, we often spend so much time caring for our families, clients, and communities that we forget to prioritize our own needs. I am learning that taking care of myself isn't selfish; it helps me show up better for the people and responsibilities that matter most.

In this season, I still have ambitious goals, but I am becoming more intentional about how I pursue them. I want a successful business, meaningful impact, a healthy life, and quality time with my family. To me, success means being able to enjoy the life I have worked so hard to create.

The Power of Woman-to-Woman Empowerment

What does woman-to-woman empowerment mean to you, and how can women genuinely support and uplift one another?

To me, woman-to-woman empowerment means understanding that another woman's success does not diminish your own. There is room for all of us to grow, succeed, and create meaningful opportunities.

I believe empowerment should go beyond words of encouragement. It means sharing knowledge, making introductions, opening doors, offering guidance, and being present when another woman needs support.

It also means having honest conversations. Sometimes, the greatest support we can offer is helping another woman recognize what may be holding her back and encouraging her to make a change.

Through financial education, mentorship, and the relationships I have built, I strive to help women gain the confidence, knowledge, and connections they need to move forward.

I believe that when one woman succeeds, she has an opportunity to make the path easier for another. I want my success to be measured not only by what I accomplish but also by the women I have encouraged and helped along the way.

“Another woman's success does not diminish your own. There is room for all of us to grow, succeed, and create meaningful opportunities.”

A Message to Another Woman

If you could share one message with a woman who is facing challenges, questioning her abilities, or finding the courage to begin again, what would you want her to know?

If there is one thing I want another woman to remember, it is this: Your current circumstances do not have to become your final destination.

I know what it feels like to pursue a dream and question whether you made the right decision. I have faced financial hardship, uncertainty, and moments when giving up might have seemed easier. But I also know that rebuilding is possible.

You do not need to have everything figured out before taking your next step. Be willing to learn, ask for help, make adjustments, and give yourself permission to begin again.

If you are building a business, learn your numbers, understand your finances, and make decisions that support the future you want. If you are overwhelmed, remember that you do not have to carry everything alone.

As you work toward becoming the woman you aspire to be, don't forget to care for the woman you are today. Celebrate your progress, protect your health, and make time for the people you love.

Your story is still being written, and one difficult chapter does not determine how it ends.

A Final Word

Octavia Conner's journey is a reminder that success is not defined by the absence of challenges, but by the courage to face them, learn from them, and continue moving forward. From the uncertainty of nearly losing her home to building a business that helps others achieve financial stability, her story illustrates the power of perseverance, self-belief, and the willingness to begin again.

Yet her journey is about more than professional success. As a wife, mother, entrepreneur, and advocate for financial empowerment, Octavia has come to recognize that a fulfilling life requires balance, intentionality, and the freedom to enjoy the people and experiences that matter most.

Her story encourages women to recognize that setbacks are not permanent, asking for help is not a weakness, and our circumstances do not have to determine our future. Sometimes, the most important step toward creating a better life is simply finding the courage to start again.

Thank you, Octavia, for sharing your journey with Woman To Woman Spotlight and reminding us that every woman has the ability to rise beyond her circumstances, embrace new possibilities, and create a future filled with purpose.
