Tyra Pickett is a Certified Online Business Manager and Founder and CEO of Pickett Fence Virtual Services LLC, an online business management firm. She’s a Certified OBM who partners with 6, 7 and 8 figure Construction Businesses and Professional Coaches & Consultants who are ready to scale their business and take it to the next level by providing Online Business Management and Construction Administration. She’s a genius at automation, creating and implementing systems & SOPs, streamlining processes and managing teams & projects.
She started her own virtual assistant business in 2015. She was able to replace her corporate full-time income, working only part-time in her VA business – all while being a new military wife, blending a family, quitting her full time job, moving to a new state, and having a newborn – ALL within 2 months! She now owns a successful Online Business Management firm with an amazing team and enjoys all the freedom, flexibility and luxuries she has created building her business.
Tyra is also a Podcaster and Virtual Assistant Coach and Mentor for ambitious women entrepreneurs. She is the Founder of The Profitable VA and she teaches women entrepreneurs how to launch, grow and uplevel their own at-home virtual assistant business, earning $5K+ per month, becoming a Profitable VA!
She created her signature course, The Profitable VA Bootcamp to help other women achieve their dreams of launching their own virtual assistant business and live their best life. She is also the creator of The Profitable VA Mastermind, a yearlong program that teaches women entrepreneurs how to turn their virtual assistant business into a profitable and sustainable online business.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?
My kids are my “why”. I’ve always had that entrepreneurial bone but didn’t know what to do with it. After having my 2nd child, I knew that I wanted to be home with her and be completely present for my kids; I wanted the freedom and flexibility to be there for them for any and everything. I want to build a legacy for them and give them the life that I always wanted. I want them to see that there's more to life than just finding a job and working for someone else. You can be your own boss and live life on your own terms. I want them to be financially set when they go into adulthood and actually have options and feel good about it.
How do you manage your work life balance?
Being a wife and mom of 3, balancing work and home life is a job all by itself! It can definitely be a struggle, especially with Covid-19 present and my kids are doing the whole virtual learning this year, so on top of running a business, I am also a homeschool-mom. So one of my biggest tips on this would be to practice time-management. Planning out my days and weeks are a must. I time-block on my calendar, which helps me keep up with appointments, meetings, virtual classes for the kids, and yes, even lunch breaks! This is huge because working from home, it’s easy to work through lunch and burn yourself out. Taking lunch breaks or mini-breaks throughout the day will help you become clearer, more focused and more productive. I set work hours for myself and I do everything in my power to stick to them. I do not work on the weekends and I don’t have meetings on Mondays or Fridays. I’ve developed the practice of, “if it’s not on my calendar, I shouldn’t be doing it”. That has saved me so much lost time. I prioritize my time as well by making a to-do list everyday on index cards, starting with the most urgent and important tasks down to the non-urgent tasks and I check them off as I complete them.
I set family time as well, this includes quality time, homework, after-school events, practices, bath time and even dinner. So I make sure that I’m unavailable for any work during those times. Another magic trick that took me some time to master is learning to say “NO”. Imagine that?! I’ve learned that my time is too valuable to try to be all things to all people. And let me tell you, that is SO freeing! I carve out time for myself as well, whether it’s a morning drive in the car to Starbucks or the grocery store, meditation or journaling before starting my day or a wine-down, movie night after the kids are in the bed. It’s important to engage in self-care. If you’re not well, you can’t be your best self for you or for others.

What would you like to share with anyone who is thinking about going into this field?
If there’s anything that I have learned through my business journey, it is Resilience and Patience. Running a business is hard. It’s even harder if you are also raising a family and trying to balance the two. There are times when you feel like throwing in the towel and giving up but you keep going. You sometimes hear more rejections than wins or approvals but that’s part of the business journey. You have to have thick skin. You have to have a strong enough “why” to get you through those moments when you feel like giving up. I tell my clients and my tribe all the time, having a business is not for the weak. You have to push past the tears and doubt and know that you will come out on top in the end. Going through the motions is just part of the journey. There will be highs and lows but never give up. If you only have highs, you never learn how resilient you can be during the lows. Trust the process and know that God has made a clear path for your abundance.
What has been your most satisfying or rewarding moment in business?
I recently celebrated 5 years as a business owner, back in July, and that has been a huge milestone in my business journey. Looking back at where I started and how my business has evolved over the years, I’m proud to still be standing strong and now I’m able to give back by teaching other women how to build and grow their own online virtual assistant business and live the life of their dreams.
I started off as a general virtual assistant and quickly niched down to Construction professionals which is an industry that is not easy to bring into the virtual space. Because my background is in construction, this was a no-brainer for me. However, when I first decided to niche down, there were only 3 other VA’s that I found during my research and 2 of them were no longer in business and 1 of them was a jack-of-all trades, so they offered more than just construction services, so I’m proud to have been able to crack the code and be one of the OBM/VA leaders in this industry.
I later became a Certified Online Business Manager and rebranded my business into an online business management firm, specializing in construction and coaching professionals. I have an amazing team that supports me and my business continues to grow. Being able to help my clients grow their businesses, build out systems and processes and help them reach their business goals have been a huge satisfaction to me. I’m a woman of service and I love being part of my clients’ success stories.

What is your take on woman to woman inspiration?
I think women are such powerful humans. We are the super glue to so much, whether it’s in personal or business life. We’re smart, beautiful, disciplined, resilient, fruitful, resourceful and magnetic. I believe that when women come together and support each other, magic happens and in a world where people tend to compare and put women against each other, there’s nothing like the support and encouragement of another sister.
